Preparations

Within the humid valleys of the Andes in Chile, Peru and Bolivia, Culen grows as a bush with aromatic leaves. Culen may be taken in the form of a tincture, infusion (tea), or in capsules. In Brazil and Bolivia, the leaves are traditionally used in the form of an infusion (tea) taken at a dosage of 1 cup, 2 to 3 times daily.

To prepare an infusion of Culen, place 1 tsp. of the powdered leaves in a tea ball or gauze bag and allow the powder to steep in 8 oz. of freshly boiled hot water in a covered ceramic pot for 10–15 minutes. Pour the infusion through a fine strainer to remove any sediment and allow it to cool for a time before drinking. Refrigerate unused portions in a well-sealed container.

Avoid contact of the tea or tincture with the skin. Culen contains the photosensitizing compounds, angelicin and psoralen. Upon exposure to ultra-violet light, they produce a sunburn-like effect. The same problem attends the handling of limes, celery, and parsley.

Caution: Not for internal use during pregnancy or lactation. If you are taking medications or have a medical condition, consult with a health care professional before use. Keep this product out of the reach of children.
